Johnston is a member of the Oregon and Washington State Bar Associations as well as the Debtor-Creditor Section of the Oregon State Bar Association. 

Johnston has made over 30 professional presentations about bankruptcy since 2000 including:

• OSB Learning the Ropes (bankruptcy, 2013 and 2012)
•  PLF Defense CLE (bankruptcy, 2013)
• Clark College (bankruptcy, 2013)

Community or Public Service Projects include:

• Voluntary Lawyers Project (pro bono, since 2010)
• Proud Ground (pro-bono, since 2012)
